The monthly book roundup

We’re talkin’ books this week, because it’s time for the monthly What’s On Your Bookshelf Challenge (hosted by SueDonnaJo and Deb).

A light reading month

Not an exciting reading month here at Camp WTF. I finished re-listening to Charlaine Harris’ Lily Bard series for the umpty-gazillionth time. A couple of them got me through the General Unpleasantness known as colonoscopy prep. I should probably create a Goodreads list of the best books for this particular occasion, because, trust me, distraction is necessary.

Colonoscopy prep pro tip: drink Mountain Dew on fasting day. All that sugar and caffeine really helps with suppressing appetite.

And you thought you wouldn’t learn anything useful on this blog.

After my triennial roto-rootering, I read a couple of short-ish books:

  • Get Your Sh*t Together – Sarah Knight. Self-help AND cussing? Sounds like my kind of book. Unfortunately, the profanity didn’t make up for the lack of substance. If you’ve never read a self-help book before, and you enjoy multiple 4-letter words per page, give it a try. But if you already know about basic things like setting goals and saving money, skip this one.
  • Switchblade – Michael Connelly. A solid Harry Bosch short story. ’nuff said.

I really need to put my phone down and read something longer than a Reddit post.

Weekly Weather Whining

I warned you last week that Weekly Weather Whining was going to become an official feature around here, at least during the summer (during the winter it will be Weekly Weather Bragging).

Here’s the forecast:

What’s with all that rain? Apparently we’re supposed to catch the remains of Hurricane Hilary. According to CNN, Hilary may drop several years’ worth of rain on the driest parts of California, including Death Valley, and send some much-needed rain to us in Arizona.

It’s still going to be hot, but: Water–yay! Rainy weekend-yay! I think I’ll do a lot of reading, writing, and cooking.

The memery

Just a few memes this time, because I need to get to work.

Behold my retirement dream:

For all you metalheads who are also typography nerds:

Plot bunny for fantasy writers:

And finally:

That’s it for me this week. Whatcha reading?

I’m reading the second book in the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. So far, it’s almost as good as the first book. I seldom read series since by the time I get the to third book, they aren’t that good any longer. I’ve been doing WAY too many webinars. But, on the other hand, I’ve gotten have of my second revision of the book I working on done.

Congrats on your revision progress! I’m making progress on mine too, though it’s going slowly.

I can relate. Sometimes I just need to shut my brain off, especially after a long workday, so I end up not reading.

Hi Janet, it’s always fun reading your posts and yes the prep for a colonoscopy isn’t the most fun way to spend a night! Thanks for sharing the books you have read during the month and being a part of #WOYBS. Hope you get to read more books in August and hope the weather forecast was right and you had rain – a perfect time to read on a rainy afternoon. x

Thanks! I just started listening to a collection of Agatha Christie short stories – perfect for this blustery Sunday.

  • Joanne

Wishing you a nice rainy weekend then. We have had more than enough rain for summer and I’m just happy it looks like we might have 3 or 4 days in a row without any!

So far all we’re getting is clouds and wind. Sigh. I hope you get the sunshine you’re wanting.

Okay, first things first, my fave meme this month is Italica… love it! I also like the sound of those Lily Bard books…the colonoscopy not so much…

    • Janet Alcorn

I still giggle every time I see the Italica meme. The Lily Bard books are worth checking out! I wish there were more of them.
