Stable and horse fencing in a field of dry grass with a mountain in the background, taken outside Flagstaff, Arizona. This place inspired my short story, "Proof Text."

Short story “Proof Text” published in Kings River Life

My short story, “Proof Text,” was just published in Kings River Life! “Proof Text” is a short suspense piece about an exhausted farm wife who must finish one essential chore. I thought up the idea when I was doing farm chores on a windy fall day in Flagstaff. Read “Proof Text” free on the Kings River Life site.

I wrote “Proof Text” in 2019, when I was still very new to fiction writing. In fact, it’s the first short story I ever wrote as an adult. With much fear and trembling, I shared it with my newly-formed critique group, expecting them to think it average at best. They loved it! And the leader of the group, my writing instructor at the time, encouraged me to enter it in the Arizona Authors Association annual literary contest. I mustered up my courage and sent it in–and it won first place! I’m not lying or being falsely modest when I say I was knock-me-over-with-a-feather shocked that it was even a finalist, let alone a first-prize winner.

“Proof Text” was published in the Arizona Authors Association annual literary magazine, which at the time was available in print only and had a very small print run. I’m thrilled that Kings River Life has reprinted it and made it freely available online.

My success with this story gave me the confidence I needed to keep writing. I hope you like it.
