Sweetwater Trail, flower pics, and a fresh batch of memes (Weekend Coffee Share #34)

Good morning and happy Friday! It’s an abso-freakin-lutely gorgeous morning down here in Satan’s Anus–54 and sunny, heading for a high of 88. But it looks like Weather Bragging Season is just about over–we’re supposed to hit 96 on Monday. *sigh*

I’ve had a pretty routine week so nothing exciting to share, just the usual: desert pics, garden pics, and a steaming hot pile of memes. But before we get to all that: Welcome to the Weekend Coffee Share, hosted by Natalie the Explorer. She has flower pix this week too, and they are *gorgeous*!

Grab a drink, pull up a seat, and let’s get to it.

Sweetwater Preserve, Tucson, AZ

A couple of weeks ago, I went hiking with a friend in Sweetwater Preserve. Please note that this place is neither sweet nor watery, but I suppose Dry Pokey Preserve wouldn’t sound as nice. One of these weeks, I’m going to have to write a post about desert place names, but this is not that week.

Anyway, my hiking buddy, unlike me, is actually in shape, so I was too busy trying to keep up with her to take very many pictures, but here are a few:

See? No water, sweet or otherwise, in sight. Plenty of pokey things though.

Trail winding through Dry Pokey Sweetwater Preserve.

Behold this gang of saguaros up to no good.

And their ringleader, who looks like he’s making devil horns at a heavy metal concert. Rock on, Big Pokey, rock on.

Seriously, that dude is a cool example of a crested saguaro. They’re “somewhat rare,” according to the National Park Service. I’ve seen about 5 of them in and around Tucson.

Garden pictures

Last week I inflicted a batch of garden pictures on you. Sorry to break it to you, but I’m doing it again. You know how some people whip out pictures of their kids the minute you get within 50 feet of them? Yeah, I do that with plants. Just nod, smile, pour a shot of whisky in your coffee to numb the boredom, and pretend you care. You wouldn’t want to bruise my fragile little ego, now would you?

Rock and Roll Rose

Rock and Roll has starred on this blog before (here and here). It’s gorgeous.

Ebb Tide rose

According to catalog pictures, Ebb Tide is supposed to be purple. Ours isn’t–it’s more of a dark magenta–but it’s still lovely. The Heirloom Roses site says, “May start as a lighter pink/magenta color but will change with patience..” Well, then it’s probably going to stay magenta, because I have zero patience. Sorry, Ebb Tide, you’ll have to settle for water and fertilizer.

Pomegranate flower

Our pomegranate is happily blooming but so far no pomegranates. Oh, well, at least it’s pretty.

Star Jasmine

It really should be called Pinwheel Jasmine, don’t you think? (Yeah, I know. I think Dry Pokey Preserve is a suitable name. I’m not allowed to name things.)

Snow peas

Right now our only crops are snow peas and a few long-in-the-tooth lemons that keep falling off the tree.

OK, y’all have suffered through enough garden pictures for one week. Let’s get to the star attraction:

This week’s memes

No meme theme this week, just the random nonsense I ran across while wasting time on social media instead of writing. My procrastination = your entertainment.

Family life

Definitely different from when I was a kid. “Maybe” was usually a softer version of, “no.”

Mother of a boy. Can confirm.

Child of the 70s. Can confirm.

BRB. Gotta go t-rex shopping.

Domesticity

True story: I bought a set of 6 containers with matching lids and put them in the dishwasher for their initial washing. ONE DAY later, all the lids were in the cabinet, and all the containers were missing. We never did find all 6.

One day, people.

One. Freaking. Day.

I’ve also been getting ready to organize the bathroom counter, getting ready to wipe down the kitchen, and getting ready to clear off the dining table.

For weeks.

I scowl at it on my way to the computer to write look at memes on Facebook.

Or when I drape myself in a shirt fresh out of the dryer. Mmmmm…

Fun fact: Tucson has something called “Brush and Bulky” week. Twice a year, you can put your oversized junk on the curb, and the city will pick it up for free. Brush and Bulky week is junkernecker heaven. It’s pretty much a holiday here at Camp WTF.

Workin’ for a livin’

I’m embarrassed to admit how long I giggled at that one. Poor Eric.

Crap I’m too lazy to categorize

This place has been on my bucket list for years (fun fact: it’s on the grounds of Alnwick Castle, which was Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies). Please, please tell me they have a gift shop.

“FFS, this HRT is useless”–Blahahahahahahaha.

And finally:

Happy Easter to those who celebrate! See y’all next week.

I’m in a couple of meme groups on Facebook, and I have funny friends. I’m an unrepentant meme thief 🙂

Janet, Thank you for your weekend coffee share that started my weekend with beautiful flower photos, impressive crested saguaros and funny memes.

You always have such great memes! And I never think of 30 years ago as being in the 1990’s! Your garden photos are fabulous.

    • Janet Alcorn

Thanks! And yeah, I should know the early 90s were 30 years ago, because Long-Suffering Husband and I celebrated our 30th anniversary last fall, but it still doesn’t seem possible.

  • Bobbiem91

Boy, you do find the most fun memes. The one about the junk hit home. I furnished my first rental in curbside finds. Nothing matched but most of it was comfortable.
Had to laugh at the toe one. Have broken a toe on each foot hitting them on furniture–yeah it hurts–a lot.
loved the ones about cleaning house. My favorite: I love housework. I can sit and look at it for hours/days/weeks/ years…lol

My dad was a scrap metal dealer, so I learned trash picking at a young age. We’ve found all sorts of interesting stuff on curbs.

I broke a toe on a sofa leg once. Not fun.

  • Anne Fraser @theplatinumline.blog

Love the photos. I don’t think I have ever seen a pomegranate flower. I did not realise they were so pretty.

    Hi Janet,
I always love seeing the beauty of Tucson that I managed to miss during my visits there.
I got to wondering why that was but quickly realized,
oh – yes – they’re all out doors,
    away from the AC.
I do recall some color in the parking lot of Der Wienerschnitzelparking over on Oracle.
It could have been spilled chili but to verify I would have had to gotten out of my cars blessed AC. . .
Nope! Not happening when I’m already restricting how far I’m willing to open my window to collect my fast food.

    • Janet Alcorn

LOL. The Der Weinerschnitzel is still on Oracle. I haven’t been there…yet.

It’s getting warmer but still pretty bearable. Supposed to be 91 tomorrow with a light breeze. But in the summer, I stay inside too.

  • trentpmcd

Top meme about 30 years ago being 1992? Really? 1992? Ouch!!!
Chili nothing, what about the foot prints on that 12-foot ceiling?
Tupperware – yes, been there, done that (well, had that happen – a drawer full of lids and a shelf full of containers and not a single match in the bunch)
The photos from your hike look nice, but f you want me I will be out kayaking. (Truthfully, I do want to -visit- the southwest again sometime in the not too distant future, but, yeah, I’m ready for more kayaking…)
    Have a great week!

Kayaking sounds lovely. I like the desert, but I miss water. Here the rivers contain… sand. That’s it. Just sand. At least till monsoon season.

The footprints on the ceiling were left by Spider Ma’am, whose HRT still isn’t working.

I helped my husband build fence on the farm. My entire body now aches. He doesn’t understand the idea that a person has muscles that aren’t used to being used. I too spend a lot of time procrastinating on a laptop.

    • Janet Alcorn

You have my sympathy. That happens to me whenever I do a bunch of heavy yard work for the first time in the season. My brain keeps forgetting my body isn’t 18 anymore.

  • leannelc

Hi Janet I laughed at the girl-foe and spider woman memes – I think I must be getting a bit cynical in my old age! Also loved the flower photos – very pretty indeed.

    • Janet Alcorn

Thanks! I really want to be Spider Ma’am. There should be something fun about menopause, dang it.

  • kirstin

Oh gosh. Those memes are awesome. They always are. I’ve never hiked in the desert…well, I guess that’s not true. I did go hike in Palm Springs, and that was pretty much desert without all the cactus. That Jasmine is gorgeous

    • Janet Alcorn

Oh, Palm Springs is definitely desert! It’s just drier and with less vegetation than the Sonoran Desert.

  • Julie

When I come across articles celebrating 30 year anniversaries, I think first “it’s been 30 years”? I still think 30 years ago was the 80s!

    • Janet Alcorn

Ha, same. I also freak out when some celebrity from my youth has a birthday. Whaddaya mean, Sammy Hagar is 74? Gah!

  • joylenebutler

I have so much to say but so little time. I’m freezing my buns off and it’s causing my brain to be more foggy than normal. Thanks for all the laughs and all the beautiful photos. Your blog is delightful as always.

    • Janet Alcorn

Aw, thanks–and sorry you’re freezing! It’s quite livable here (67, heading for 84) but we’re supposed to be in the upper 90s by Tuesday. *sigh*
